Southwest Coast Path - Portreath to Gwithian - Penwith visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Southwest Coast Path - Portreath to Gwithian' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Cornwall.
The Southwest Coast Path section between Portreath and Gwithian Beach covers 7.5 miles along the cliff top at the edge of Reskajeage Downs on the north coast of Cornwall. The land here is managed by the National Trust. The walk leaves Portreath heading past Ralph's Cupboard for Western Hill. Local legend states that Ralph's Cupboard, a collapsed sea cave, was home to a giant that ate the crew of passing ships.
The walk continues past Porthcadjack Cove and Basset's Cove to Crane Islands and North Cliffs where the remains of Crane Castle, an Iron Age hill fort looks out to sea. It then continues along the North Cliffs past Deadman's Cove to Hell's Mouth, where the ocean breaks against steep cliffs. The walk then continues around Navax Point and Godrevy Head, with views to the lighthouse on Godrevy Island, before finally descending onto Gwithian Sands and into Gwithian itself.
The coastline along this stretch of Corwnall is dramatic, and full of wildlife. Grey seals breed among the caves and the area is rich in bird life, the numerous sea stacks being home to Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills and Fulmars among others.
