Olympic Stadium and Ring - FURTHER INFORMATION

Olympic Stadium and Ring - Barcelona visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Olympic Stadium and Ring' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Catalonia.

The Olympic Ring (Anella Olímpica) was the main site for the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona. The complex occupies part of Montjuïc hill to the west of the city center and contains the Olympic Stadium, Palau Sant Jordi sports hall, Picornell swimming arena, National Physical Education Institute (INEFC) and Santiago Calatrava telecommunications tower.

The Olympic Stadium (Estadi Olimpic) was refurbished for the 1992 Olympic Games. Formerly known as the 'Estadi Olimpic de Montjuïc', it was renamed the 'Estadi Olímpic Lluis Companys' in honour of Lluis Companys i Jover, who was executed at the nearby Montjuïc Castle in 1940 by the Franco regime. Today the Olimpic Stadium is a popular tourist attraction in Barcelona for those exploring Montjuic. The stadium has a capacity of 55,926 and is still used for sporting events.

The Santiago Calatrava telecommunications tower, shown in this picture, has become a well known landmark of Barcelona. It was built to transmit television signals for the Olympics and designed also to act as a sundial, casting its shadow into Europa Square.

Other Olympic sites in Barcelona include the Barcelona Olympic Village and Port Olimpic Marina, both of which lie near Passeig Martim Beach on the seafront. Parts of the Olympic Village have been converted into hotels and apartments.
