Poble Espanyol de Montjuic - FURTHER INFORMATION

Poble Espanyol de Montjuic - Barcelona visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Poble Espanyol de Montjuic' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Catalonia.

Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) was built for the 1929 Expo on the side of Montjuïc in Barcelona. It was originally intended to be a temporary exhibit containing 116 buildings reflecting the different architectural styles found throughout Spain, but proved so popular that it was not demolished. The village was used as an interment centre during the Spanish Civil War (when nearby Castell de Montjuic was used as a prison), but apart from this has continuously proved a popular tourist attraction.

In 1988 the Poble Espanyol was renovated and several other attractions added in the run up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (the Olympic Stadium is nearby on Montjuïc). The focus of the village is now on traditional arts and there are over 40 workshops where local artists produce and sell glassworks, decorative paintings, ceramics, embroidery, jewelry and other products in the little shops that line the alleyways. Around the various squares are numerous restaurants, bars, cafes and even nightclubs.

Entrance to the Poble Espanyol is ticketed, but once inside access to all other areas, including the Fundació Fran Daurel art gallery. Combined tickets can be purchased that also cover entrance to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. This picture shows the buildings around Poble Espanyol's Plaza Major (Main Square).
