Ratnagiri lies on the Arabian Sean in the southwestern part of the Maharashtra state of India. It is an important port town with a thriving fishing industry and marine research station. The surrounding area produces abundant rice, coconuts, cashew nuts, and fruits, delicious 'Hāpus' (Alphonso) mangoes.
Ratnagiri is a popular travel destination with numerous hotels and hostels for visitors. The surrounding coastline has numerous untouched beaches with both Ratnagiri beach and Murud Janjira near Alibaug being popular. The most famous beaches in the area are Mandavi Beach and Bhatye Beach. Bhatye beach has the Suru ban and KOHINOOR hotel.
Attractions around Ratnagiri:
- Rajapur Ganga - some 3km from the town, a rare natural siphon from surrounding mountains resulting in fourteen blackstone 'kunda' (pools), each about 2.25 feet deep. The Rajapur Ganga flows for a couple of months once every three years.
- Thebaw Palace - built in 1910-11 and lived in by the king and queen of Burma during their exile between 1911-1916.
- Jay Gad - a 17th century fort built on the cliffs at the mouth of the Sangameshwar River with stunning views over the sea
- Ratnadurga Fort - surrounded by sea on three sides and containing a temple to the goddess Bhagwati.
- Mālgund and Ganpatipule - Malgund village 20km north of Ratnagiri with birthplace of the poet Keshavsut. Contains the Keshavsut Smārak monument. Ganapatipule is a scenic village with a Ganesh temple and 6km of virgin beach
- Parashurām Temple - near Chiplun (90km north or Ratnagiri), built in 1685 by Maharshi Brahmendra
- MARLESHWAR - 70km from Ratnagiri, a famous Shiva temple built inside a cave with a nearby waterfall
- Caves -those near Caves in Chiplun, Khed, Dabhol, Sangameshwar, Gauhani Velgaum, and Vade Padel are worth visting
- Chundolli National Park - natural rain forest and part of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve with waterfalls, ruined temples and palaces. About 60km northeast of Ratnagiri
