The Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) attraction in Barcelona stands on the flank of Montjuic. It was built in 1929 for the Spanish Expo World Fair with the aim of creating an example of a traditional village with a difference. Inside the 116 buildings, squares and alleyways represent the different architectural styles found in the various regions of Spain. Some of the buildings are exact replicas of some important historic buildings. The entrance gates reflect the Puerta de San Vincente in Avila, Castilla y León.
Originally, the Poble Espanyol was only intended to be a temporary structure, but it proved so popular that it was retained. From 1997 the site has been renovated, keeping the original architecture but adding facilities for various arts and crafts to be created on site. Thus today the Poble Espanyol is a combination of a museum, tourist attraction, showcase for Spanish craftsmanship and shopping center. Also within the complex are spaces dedicated to art, such as the Sculpture Garden and the Fundació Fran Daurel.
It is easy to spend the best part of the day browsing the various artisan workshops, relaxing in the square or dining out. The Poble also has an active night life and one night club. Entrance to the Poble Espanyol is ticketed and joint tickets can for the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya nearby are available. Other attractions around Poble Espanyol are marked on the map of Barcelona.
