Schilthorn Mountain Viewpoint - FURTHER INFORMATION
Schilthorn Mountain Viewpoint - Jungfrau visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Schilthorn Mountain Viewpoint' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Bernese Oberland.
The Schilthorn mountain rises to a height of 2,970m above Mürren in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. Perched on the top of the Schilthorn is the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, where skiers and mountain hikers can sit and watch the Swiss Alps of Bernese Oberland pass by.
From here visitors can pick out the peaks of Titlis (3238m), Jungfrau (4158m), Mönch (4107m), Eiger (3970m), Morgenhorn (3623m), Weisse Frau (3630m), Blümlisalp (3657m) and Hundshorn (2928m). On clear days the view stretches to the Jura mountains and Vosges Mountains, sometimes as far as Mont Blanc.
The Piz Gloria is a popular destination both with skiers in the winter and mountain walkers in the summer. It has seating for 400 and revolves 360° about once per hour giving diners a stunning and continuously unfolding view of the mountains. At the rear of the restaurant is a viewing area with a helipad, again a popular viewpoint in this famous skiing and walking area. It was made famous when used as a filming location for the 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' James Bond movie.
Once a year the Schilthorn is the starting place for the Inferno Ski Race which descends about 2,200m along a 10 mile course ending near the Hotel Schützen in Lauterbrünnen . The Inferno is the oldest ski race in the world, started in 1928 by Sir Arnold Lunn, an English skier and one of the Fathers of Alpine skiing. It has run every year since WWII and today some 1,800 people take part. In 1929 the winner completed the course in 1 hour 12 minutes. Today, winning skiers complete the course in around 15 minutes.
Aside from the black Schilthorn ski run, which can be walked in the summer, the only way down from the Schilthorn is the cable car back to Birg.
These panoramas are also displayed on this Jungfrau Ski and Piste Map where you will find more information about this ski resort.
