Mürren-Schilthorn Skiing - Black Run 16 - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Skiing panorama of the view down the Jungfrau valley from part way down the black run 16. This picture was taken very late in the afternoon on my final descent down the mountain from Schilthorn. Just above me are a few snow boarders taking a break while other skiers can be seen further down. The view of the Murren skiing area from here is stunning. The little settlement of Allmendhubel can be seen below.

Mürren-Schilthorn Skiing - Black Run 16 - FURTHER INFORMATION

Mürren-Schilthorn Skiing - Black Run 16 - Jungfrau visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Mürren-Schilthorn Skiing - Black Run 16' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Bernese Oberland.

Piste 16 (Kanonenrohr-Mürren) is a black run within the Mürren-Schilthorn ski area. The run starts near the bottom of red run 15 and leads down to Allmendhubel, where a network of runs continue down the mountain to Mürren. Near the bottom of run 16 a side route heads off to the bottom of the Maulerhubel chairlift.

The Mürren-Schilthorn skiing area is a popular part of the wider Jungfrau ski region in the Bernese Oberland Alps in Switzerland, covering some of the slopes to the east of the Jungfrau valley. From here there are stunning views over to the Eiger and Jungfrau mountains on the opposite side of the valley, while above rises the peak of the Schilthorn, home to the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant.

It is possible start at the Piz Gloria (2970m) with the Schilthorn run (black), pass Obere Hubel (2439), past Allmendhubel and Sonnenberg mountain bar to end up in Mürren (1638m) in one go without using ski lifts. Descending about 1,330m, this provides some of the best skiing and most stunning scenery in the whole of Europe, starting with a sweeping panoramic views stretching as far as Mont Blanc from the Piz Glora viewing platform.

Part of this route is followed by the annual 10 mile Inferno Downhill ski race, which starts near the top of the Schilthorn and ends in Lauterbrunnen for a total descent of about 2,000m. The Inferno started in 1928, about 1,800 people take part and winning times of around 15 minutes can be expected, with mere mortals taking around 30 minutes.

In the summer months the area is popular with walkers and this is part of a route that starts in Mürren and ends at 4561,Piz Gloria. During the summer months Schilthornhütte has 25 beds for walkers set in a single dormitory. From here there are great views over the Jungfrau valley, taking in the peaks of the Eiger, Jungfaru and Monch mountains.
