Schilthornbahn Cable Car - Mürren - Jungfrau visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Schilthornbahn Cable Car - Mürren' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Bernese Oberland.
The Schilthornbahn cable car heads up from Mürren (1638m) to the top of the Schilthorn (2970), stopping at the Birg Restaurant on the way. It is a very popular ride all year round. At the top of the cable car is the world-famous Piz Gloria revolving restaurant, which offers stunning panoramic views over the Bernese Oberland Alps in Switzerland.
The Piz Gloria was used as a set in the James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and has a 007 exhibition in the lower level. The restaurant revolves about once an hour and out the back is a stunning viewing platform. On clear days the views from Piz Gloria stretch as far as Mont Blanc, taking in the Jura mountains and Vosges Mountains. Closer to home are the peaks of Titlis (3238m), Jungfrau (4158m), Mönch (4107m), Eiger (3970m), Morgenhorn (3623m), Weisse Frau (3630m), Blümlisalp (3657m) and Hundshorn (2928m).
During the winter ski season, the Schilthornbahn takes skiers to the upper slopes of the Schilthorn. The first stop allows people to alight at the Birg Restaurant and access to the blue runs around Engetal and red and black runs around Obere Hubel and the Schilthornhütte ski hut and bar. Only one black run, the Schilthorn ski run descends down from the topmost station of the Schilthornbahn, starting just outside the Piz Gloria restaurant. The lift is covered by the Mürren-Schilthorn area ski pass and ski passes for the larger Jungfrau Ski Region.
If you are up for it, at the end of the day, get a warming drink in the restaurant and then ski all the way down from the top of the Schilthorn back down to Mürren. This route descends mostly black and red graded pistes, descending 1,322m past Obere Hubel and Allmendhubel (1,900m) on the way down. The annual Inferno Downhill ski race departs from near the top of the Schilthornbahn and travels along a 10km route finishing in Lauterbrünnen. The race started in 1928 and today winning times of around 15 minutes can be expected. More information about skiing in the region can be found on this Jungfrau Area Piste Map.
During the summer months the area is very popular for mountain walking and climbing. It is possible to walk from Mürren to the top of the Schilthorn in a day. For those wishing to break the journey, the Schilthornhütte at the top of Obere Hubel has 25 beds in one dormitory.
