The Church of Sant Pau del Camp is the oldest church in Barcelona. The name translates as 'St. Paul of the Countryside' and reflects the fact that when it was built by Benedictine monks in the 10th century, the church lay in fields outside the city walls. The church was rebuilt during the 11th and 12th centuries.
The church remains very intact, with 13th century carvings of an ox and lion, symbolic of the Apostles Luke and Mark, either side of the door. Above the door are relief carvings representative of Matthew and John. The interior of the church is very plain. The church is open to the public between 6 and 7:45pm and entrance is free.
