Dagenham is a suburb of Greater London in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It lies about 13 miles east of central London within the county of Essex inside the M25. The area was once filled with heavy industry, containing a large Ford car factory (now a wind farm), Stirling arms plant and a large coal landing site at Dagenham Docks on the River Thames. These have since closed and much of the brownfield land is subject to intensive reclamation as part of the Thames Gateway redevelopment projects.
An example of new land use is Eastbrookend Country Park formed from gravel pits in the 1990's. Dagenham used to be a rural village, and parts of this past, like the parish church still exist. New developments are making the area increasingly attractive for workers in London, linked to the center of the city by both rail and tube, with easy access to the countryside and containing numerous parks and nature reserves.
