The ancient village of Roslin in Scotland is most famous for the Rosslyn Chapel, easily the most popular tourist attraction in the area and one of the proposed resting places for the Holy Grail. The village was probably founded around the beginning of the 3rd century. It is also known as 'Rosslyn' and 'Roslyn'; the name thought to be a derivative of the Celtic ros+celyn (moor+holly), or ross+lynn (rocky promontory+waterfall / pool).
Roslin grew up around Rosslyn Castle, the remains of which stand on a rocky promontory overlooking River North Esk in Roslin Glen. Parts of the castle date back to the 1304 and it was surrounded by buildings in the 1500's. However, nothing of this village remains, and the more modern village and parish church were built on the current location above the glen.
Roslin grew up around coal mining, which was an important industry in the area from the 12th to 20th century. It was also the seat of the St. Clair family, granted burgh status by King James II in 1456.
Roslin is within easy distance of the Pentlands, Hillend Ski Centre (Europe's largest artificial ski-slope) and several world class golf courses and resorts. It is also very close to Edinburgh and often visited as a part day trip from there.
