Rosslyn Chapel Roof - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from the walkway that stood around the roof of Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. The canopy shown in this picture will be removed in the later part of 2009, but while up gave great access to the details of the roof. This vantage point also had good views over Roslin Glen.

Rosslyn Chapel is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Midlothian. The chapel has been protected by a canopy for about 10 years. This allowed the stonework to gradually dry out so that essential conservation works could be carried out to prevent the chapel from collapsing. Inside, so much water had penetrated the chapel that algae was growing on some of the stonework. The drying process has slowly resolved this problem, removing the green covering on much of the roof interior and some other stonework.
Whilst the canopy partially obscures Rosslyn Chapel from ground level, public access to a walkway at roof level has allowed visitors unprecedented access to the roof revealing the fine work and detail of the stonework. The masons took great pride in all their work, often inserting personal details even where the result may never be seen.
Rosslyn Chapel's canopy was expected to be removed in late 2009.
