Portland with a population of approx. 12,000 is a major deep-sea port on Victoria's south-west coast, 360 kilometres west of Melbourne.

Portland is an exporting centre for produce and its economy is supported by an aluminium smelter, fertiliser and fishing industry and woolstores.

Before European settlement the area was occupied by the Kerrup-Tjmara indigenous inhabitants. Before the arrival of pastoralists in the 1800's the area had been used for sealing and whaling.
