In the distant past Wareham used to be an important port in Dorset, but the Wareham Channel has silted up considerably over the intervening centuries so that today only small pleasure craft can navigate up to Wareham from Poole Harbour. It is not unusual to see small pleasure craft moored alongside the quay.Wareham Quay is a focal point of town life. The quay is lined with various shops, contains the Granary Restaurant and is close to both Lady St Mary church and the Priory Hotel. On the quay is a pay-and-display car park, and is sometimes used to host small festivals. This bridge links Wareham with Corfe Castle to the south. Just north of here in an old church building visible in this picture is Wareham Tourist Information Centre.
