Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the oldest and most influential universities in China. It was listed in the 2008 ARWU report as among the top 6 universities in China and within the top 40 universities of the Asia / Pacific region. This panorama shows part of the Xuhui Campus in the Xuhui District of Shanghai.

The life of the university dates back to 1896 when Nanyang Public School was founded by an edict issued by Emperor Guangxu. The Schools developed and changed several times. In 1956 several engineering departments of the university were moved by the government to Xi'an to create Xi'an Jiaotong University. The facility in Shanghai was then renamed to 'Shanghai Jiao Tong University'.

In 2005 Shanghai Jiao Tong University merged with the Shanghai Second Medical University, which is now called the Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The university today runs over 60 undergraduate programmes covering 22 disciplines as well as numerous master degree and PhD degree courses for about 30,000 students. The university is spread over several campuses scattered through various districts of Shanghai. The oldest campus is Xuhui Campus in the Xuhui District founded in 1935. The other campuses are Minhang Campus in the Minhang District (founded 1987), Chongqingnan Road Campus in the Luwan District, Qibao Campus on Qixin Rd (founded 1999), Fahua Campus and Shangzhong Campus.
