Nanjing Road is one of the most important and popular shopping areas in Shanghai, attracting a million visitors a day. At 6km in total length, Nanjing Road is the longest shopping district on earth. It runs est-west near the city center, starting at The Bund (Wai Tan) and proceeding west through People's Square towards Jing'an District. Nanjing Road has been a focus for commerce in Shanghai for over 100 years.

Near The Bund is the Peace Hotel and on this stretch of Nanjing Road used to be full of fancy European style restaurants. Nearby is Central Market, an outdoor market that has existed for about a century. Today Central Market specializes in electronics and computer media. Also near here is the Chenghuang Temple (City God Temple).

Further west is the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall which contains the oldest department store in Shanghai as well as a large number of independent retail outlets. Beyond the pedestrian zone is the People's Park, which used to be Shanghai Race Course, marking the end of the eastern half of Nanjing Road. Beyond this is West Nanjing Road with many up-market department stores, office buildings, hotels and the Shanghai Exhibition Centre.

Shanghai Metro: Line 2 runs down the road stopping at Nanjing Road (E), Nanjing Road (W) and Jing'an Temple.
