Huangshan Mountain - FURTHER INFORMATION
Huangshan Mountain - Huangshan Mountain visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Huangshan Mountain' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Anhui.
This panorama shows a view over the Huangshan Mountain (Mount Huang) taken from Lotus Peak. Huangshan is a granite massive with 36 peaks, several of which top 1800m. The mountains are in the Anhui province of southern China. The name literally means 'Yellow Mountains' and the area is famous for the strangely shaped granite peaks, dramatic sunsets and beautiful scenery. Huangshan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important tourist attractions in China, often featuring in Chinese paintings, literature and photographs.
The highest peaks in the Hunagshan Range are Lotus Peak (Lian Hua Feng, 1,864 m), Bright Summit Peak (Guang Ming Ding, 1,840 m), and Celestial Peak (Tian Du Feng, literally Capital of Heaven Peak, 1,829 m). Several other peaks also top the 1000m height.
Mount Huang has played an important role in the history of China, and was named Huang after Emperor Huang Di (Yellow Emperor). Myth states that Huang Di was the ancestor of the Han Chinese peoples and ascended to heaven from the peak of the mountain. Up to that time Huang Mountain was little known, but thereafter the importance of the mountain grew and monasteries were built upon it.
One of the more unusual features of Huangshan are around 60,000 steps that are carved into the side of the mountain, which date back over 1500 years. Today, the range is an important tourist destination laced with mountain trails used for walking. Taiping cable car takes visitors directly to one of the peaks and there are numerous hotels and guest houses with restaurants at the top. Various companies offer day-hike and longer walking tours within the range, exploring the mountains and surrounding villages.
