Wat Ratchaburana - FURTHER INFORMATION
Wat Ratchaburana - Ayutthaya visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Wat Ratchaburana' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Central Thailand.
Wat Ratchaburana stands near Pa Than Bridge in the Old Town of Ayatthaya, opposite Wat Mahathat. King Boromracha II (1424-48) erected the wat in memory of his elder brothers, Chao Ay and Chao Yi, who fought each other in a duel over the secession to the throne. The duel took place on elephant back and both brothers were killed.
The walls of the wiharn still stand, as shown in this picture, and within the compound are some ancient columns. The temple prang is even coated with some original stucco work. It is possible to ascend the interior of the prang to a viewing platform with views over the old city. In the basement of the prang are some interesting wall paintings, probably the work of Chinese artists.
Excavations following looting in 1957 revealed a number of ancient artefacts, buddha images and other items, many of which are now on display in the Chao Sam Phraya Nation Museum.
