Wat Ratchaburana is one of the more popular attractions in Ayutthaya Old Town. the temple was built in the 15th century by King Boromracha II in memory of his two brothers who killed each other in a duel on elephant back over the succession of the throne.
Parts of Wat Ratchaburana area very well preserved compared to other wats in Ayutthaya. The temple prang is covered with some original stucco work, and the wall and some columns of the wiharn (main temple building) also still stand. Around the grounds are various other chedis and ruined structures.
It is possible to ascend part of the prang to get a better view over the city. In the basement are some old rooms with ancient Chinese wall art depicting part of Buddha's life. In the 1950's some of the crypt was looted and further excavations revealed various ancient Buddha statues and other artefacts, many of which are now housed in the Chao Sam Phraya Nation Museum.
