This panorama was taken late in the afternoon at the Monument Of King Naresuan near Ayutthaya. The monument is also a shrine to the king and a couple of stores nearby sell offerings to pilgrims.

Monument of King Naresuan is one of the attractions near to Ayutthaya, on the road to Wat Phukhao Thong. It is built in memory of King Naresuan, who ruled Ayutthaya for 15 years between 1590 and his death in 1605.

King Naresuan was born in Ayutthaya, then part of Siam, but raised in Burma where he stayed as a hostage to ensure the good behaviour of his father, King Thammaraja, who was a vassal king of the Burmese. Naresuan never forgot his roots, or the suffering inflicted upon his people by the Burmese, and when he returned to Siam he strengthened Ayutthaya's defences and eventually helped free Siam from Burmese rule.

The monument is surrounded by cockerels, this may be a reminder of a cock-fight between Naresuan and the Burmese Crown Prince, who was jealous of Naresuan's previous military victory supressing the rebellious town of Moung Kang in Burma, which the Crown Prince had failed to do. The Crown Prince also then lost the cock fight and was further humiliated.

The Monument of King Naresuan is off the 309 highway northwest of Ayutthaya.
