Greyfriars Kirk (Greyfriars Tolbooth & Highland Kirk) is a famous church in Edinburgh and has become a tourist attraction in the city. The church used to be associated with the Grey Friars of the Franciscan Order, and hence the name.

Greyfriars Kirk was built in 1620 and is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh outside the Old Town. It has an important place in the history of the Covenanters, the National Covenant was signed here in 1638 and in 1679 about 1200 Cevenanters were imprisoned in the Kirkyard.

Much of the church was damaged in a fire in 1845 and restoration of Greyfriars took many years. There are many famous graves within the Kirkyard, one of which was guarded by Bobby a dog who stood over his owners grave for 14 years.
