Dover has had a port since Roman times and is in a strategic place on the narrowest point of the English Channel, just 21 miles from France. The Port of Dover today is still an important transport link to France with numerous ferries taking cars and lorries across the Straits of Dover each day. Currently there are four ferry companies offering services from the Port of Dover and the most popular crossing is to Calais:
- LD Lines - 1 Ferry and 1 Catamaran providing up to 6 ferries daily to Boulogne
- Norfolkline - 3 ships in service with up to 12 ferries daily to Dunkirk.
- P&O Ferries - 7 ships providing up to 29 ferries daily to Calais.
- SeaFrance - 5 ships giving up to 20 ferries a day to Calais.
