The Cathedral Square of Dalt Vila (Upper Town) is surrounded by some of the most important buildings in the fortified complex. As well as the Cathedral de Santa Maria itself, here you will find the Diocesan Museum, Archaeological Museum, Casa de la Curia (Madina Yabisa visitor centre) and Bishops Palace. Nearby is also the castel (castle).
Dalt Vila (D'alt Vila) was established by the Phoenicians in the 6th century BC when they moved here from sa Caleta, a short distance to the west of Ibiza (Eivissa) town. With excellent defensive position, Ibiza soon became the main port of entry to Ibiza island. Today is an important historic site and tourist attraction on the island, full of Renaissance buildings and fortifications and narrow lanes lined with boutique shops and restaurants. In 1999 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
