Dalt Vila (Upper Town) was founded in the 6th century BC when the Phoenicians moved here from their settlement in sa Caleta. Many of the buildings and the walls of the current fortifications date from the Renaissance period of the 16th century, built on the orders of King Felipe II. This gave good protection to Ibiza Harbour and Ibiza (Eivissa) town, guarding the main entrance point to Ibiza island.
Today, Dalt Vila (D'alt Vila) is an important tourist attraction. It is surrounded by high walls and 7 bastions, each with commanding, panoramic views over the surrounding area. Bastion Santa Lucia is on the northeast corner of Dalt Vila with views over the harbour and east towards Cala Talamanca.
Dalt Vila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The narrow lanes are full of boutique shops and restaurants, with museums and other important buildings clustered around the Cathedral Square.
