Dalt Vila (Upper Town) is one of the tourist attractions in Ibiza (Eivissa) town, an imposing fortified area on top of a hill overlooking the harbour and modern town. Most of the fortifications and walls were built in the 16th century, but the site has been occupied since the 6th century BC when the Phoenicians moved here from their settlement in sa Caleta. There are 5 entrances to Dalt Vila from the surrounding town. Ses Taules Gate, shown in this picture, is one of the main entrances, leading up from the fisherman's Marina district.
Today, Dalt Vila is popular for the old buildings and cobbled streets, lined with restaurant and cafes. The battlements are surrounded by walls with 7 bastions lined with canon, from which there are stunning, panoramic views over the bay. Around Cathedral Square are a number of museums and the Cathedral of Santa Maria. At the top of the hill is an ancient castle.
Dalt Vila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
