Ningbo is a port city south of the Hangzhou Bay in Zhejiang, China,facing the East China Sea. It was one of five Treaty Ports China was forced to open to foreign trade after the Opium Wars in the 19th century. Today the city remains an important trading port, close to Shanghai.
Ningbo means 'Serene Waves' and is sometimes called Yǒng after Yong Hill and the Yong River, which flows through Ningbo. It is one of the oldest cities in China, with history dating back to 4800BC, the birthplace of Hemudu Culture and was an important trading city on the Silk Road.
Ningbo Sights and Attractions: Ningbo has strong Buddhist roots and around the city are numerous ancient temples, in addition to other attractions:
- Tian Yi Ge Bowuguan (Tianyi Pavilion Museum) - one of the top tourist attractions in Ningbo. Built in 1516 near Moon Lake (Yuehu) it is said to be the oldest surviving library building in China. The library's garden and outhouses are open to the public.
- Tian Yi Square - main square and principle shopping area in Ningbo.
- Moon Lake (Ningbo Yuehu) - laid out in the 7th century, the park is near to the Tianyi Pavilion Museum and contains 96.7 hectares of water and parkland.
- Lao Waitan - seat of much of the nightlife in Ningbo similar to Shanghai's Xintiandi. Lined with bars, clubs and restaurants.
- Asoka Temple - 1700 years old containing the relics of Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism
- Tiantong Temple - 5th century temple well known for the subtle architecture and beautiful surroundings.
- Baoguo Temple - one of the best preserved wooden temples of its type in China, found in Jiangbei District, 15 km north of Ningbo city.
- Other Temples - Qita Temple, the Tianfeng Pagoda and the Xiantong Pagoda.
- Ningbo Tianfeng Tower - 5 minutes from Tianyi Square and next to Cheng Huang Temple, first built during the Tang Dynasty (695-696) then rebuilt during the Song Dynasty (1144), for a long time this was the tallest building in Ningbo.
- Shangliang Gang Forest Park Resort - forest parkland 37km from Ningbo, northwest of FengHua, next to Xikou.
