(Tvrdosin) Tvrdošín is a small mountain town in the Zilina region of Slovakia. The town is built on the confluence of the Orava and Oravica rivers, just 12km from the border with Poland, and was first mentioned in the 12th century Zobor Charter, when Tvrdošín was known as 'Toarsin' and 'Doardi'.

Tvrdošín suffered badly during the anti-Habsburg uprisings of the 17th and 18th centuries, with armed forces continually moving across the territory and the town was almost destroyed by fire during this period.

Tvrdošín is surrounded by beautiful countryside and lakes providing many natural attractions around the town. Other local attractions inlcude:

• Wooden Church - 15th century Gothic church and originally built without nails, recently restored in 1993.
• Orava Castle - 27km from Tvrdošín in Oravsky Podzamok, built in 1267, badly damaged by fire in 1800 and substantially restored between 1953-1968.
• Gallery of Maria Medvecká - autobiographical exhibition of the life and works of Maria Medvecká.
• Orava Dam Lake - artificial lake formed by the hydroelectric Orava Dam, suitable for various water sports like water cycling, windsurfing, sailing, water skiing, fishing and diving. Ovara Lake is very popular during the summer months.
• Meander Water Park in Oravice - geothermal water with bathing, swimming, massage and general relaxation.
• Meander Ski Park in Oravice - winter skiing possible in this small ski park with 3 pistes, drag lift and chair lift.
