Oeiras town lies on the northern side of the Tagus River estuary, and has virtually merged with the outer suburbs of Lisboa, which lies a little to the east. It is just west of the Estoril Coast, famous for beaches and luxury hotels. It is a short distance from the popular resort of Caxias where the Marquês de Pombal built a summer palace in the 18th century, complete with beautiful gardens full of statues, fountains and cascades. Between the 16th and 17th centuries Oeiras part of a line of fortresses built to defend Lisbon.
Aside from Oeiras Beach at Paço de Arcos, Oeiras has several other attractions to offer visitors including:
- Fábrica da Pólvora - former 16th century gun powder factory, now used for leisure and cultural purposes.
- Poets Park - so called for the numerous statues of various Portuguese poets found within it.
- Palace of the Royal Estate at Caxias - 18th century palace surrounded by Baroque gardens and parkland.
- Oeiras Marina - built to hold around 60 pleasure boats and yachts, ideal place to charter boats for sailing, fishing and other water sports.
- Maritime Walk - seafront promenade running between Algés and Torre beach.
- Various Golf Courses - that surround the area and also around Estoril and Cascais.
- Tennis at Estoril Court Central - location of the Estoril Open tennis competition.
- Museu de Marinha (Maritime Museum) - 6 miles away in Belem, this is one of the best maritime museums in Europe.
- Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga - also in Belem, the National Museum of Ancient Art holds one of the greatest collections of paintings in Portugal.

Road: Oeiras is 19km west of Lisboa and 13km east of Cascais.
