Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) stands at the entrance of Lisbon harbour on the northern bank of the Talgus River, built as both part of the defences and also in celebration of the Age of Discovery. From the sea Belém Tower resembles a caravel boat, it is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside Monastery of the Hieronymites, and a popular tourist attraction in Lisbon, close to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument. On the southern bank is the Sao Sebastiao da Caparica defence.
Torre de Belém was built in Manueline style between1515-21. Alongside the function of a fortress, the tower is highly decorated and ornate, composed of a polygonal bastion from which rises a multi storey square tower. Designed by Francisco de Arruda who had previously been to Morocco, the Torre de Belém has Moorish influences, seen in the domed guard towers on the bastion, delicate decorations, the arched windows and balconies.
The tower is open to the public, and visiting times vary during the year, admission fees apply. The Torre de Belém is a short tram ride from the center of Lisbon. This picture shows a view of the Torre de Belém from a nearby park.
