National Maritime Museum - Further Information

The National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich, southeast London is the one of the largest maritime museums on earth. Occupying the former Royal Hospital School buildings on the northern end of Greenwich Park it is the main tourist attraction in Greenwich, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The National Maritime Museum collections contain over 2 million items, mostly related to the sea, and the largest and most important collection of British maritime history and developments from Roman times on. Highlights within the museum include:

  • Ships Models - finely detailed ships models showing developments through time.
  • Clocks and Chronometers - the development of ships clocks and chronometers from the 16th century onwards, and the battle to overcome the longitude. Includes the famous time keepers developed by John Harrison.
  • Charts and Maps - how sailors viewed and navigated thw world, maps and charts from the 15th century onwards.
  • Paintings and Drawings - over 3000 naval and sea-related paintings and drawings through the ages from the 1500's onwards.
  • Special Exhibitions - check the National Maritime Museum website for details of special exhibitions.

Admission to the NMM is free, though temporary and special exhibitions may be ticketed. The NMM is part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, which also incorporates the Royal Observatory and 17th-century Queen's House. It is opposite Greenwich University.
