Chapel of St Peter and St Paul - Further Information

The Chapel of St Peter and St Paul in the Old Royal Naval College in London was built in 1752. It was the last major component of what was then Greenwich Hospital to be built. The original chapel was built in plain Baroque style, but this was gutted in a fire in 1779. The chapel was then redesigned in Greek Revival style by James 'Athenian' Stuart and reopened in 1789. After extensive restoration works in the 1950's, the chapel now appears very much as it did in 1779.

The Chapel of St Peter and St Paul is now commonly known as the university chapel. Like the Painted Hall nearby, it is open to the public on most days. It is still used as an active place of worship as well as a venue for choral events and concerts.

The marble floor around the pulpit reflects past naval links, including a ship's anchor lying north-south, and a rope design said to match exactly in size the anchor cable of a first rate ship of the line.

The Old Royal Naval College is part of Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also includes the National Maritime Museum, Queen's House the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park and Cutty Sark tea clipper.
