The Sir John Soane's Museum stands on the northern side of Lincoln's Inn Fields in Holborn, central London. The museum houses the private collection of Sir John Soane (1753 - 1837), an architect who lived here between 1792 and 1837. His intention was to create a collection of artefacts to which 'amateurs and students' should have access, entrance this London attraction is free.

Sir John Soane's Museum occupies three houses, each of which Sir John Soane demolished and rebuilt to his own design, starting with number 12 and ending with number 14. He lived in No.13. Eventually he negotiated an Act of Parliament in 1833 which ensured that the museums would pass into public hands and be maintained.

Sir John Soane collected many antiquities, some of which are worthy of the nearby British Museum, as well as over 30,000 architectural drawings through the ages. Some of the highlights of the collections include the sarcophagus of Seti I, Roman bronzes from Pompeii, several Canalettos and a collection of paintings by Hogarth.

Wondering around the museum, every corner and cranny holds something of interest covering a diverse range of ages and cultures. Inside you will discover various medieval antiquities, Renaissance antiquities, 17th and 18th-century sculpture, Neo-Classical sculpture, 18th and 19th century manufacturing casts, Oriental objects, clocks and other timepieces, various antique furniture, stained glass, paintings and picture frames.

The Sir John Soane's Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10-5pm, entrance is free.
