Ardrossan lies on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula in South Austlralia, about 150km from Adelaide. The town has a strong history with agriculture and remains the most important grain port in the region. In the 19th century Ardrossan saw the invention of the Stump-jump plough, which prevented snagging on large rocks, one of the most important agricultural inventions of the time.
The local history of the area is well presented in the Ardrossan And District Historical Museum. Today, the town also relies on the tourism industry, acting as a gateway to the Yorke Peninsula. Nearby is the Ardrossan Golf Club.
Androssan is popular with residents from Adelaide who come here to fish and catch blue crabs. Scuba diving is also popular. About 15 miles off shore is the wreck of the Zanoni, probably one of the best preserved 19th century merchant sailing vessels in Australia. She sank in 1867 and was discovered 126 years later in 1983.
This panorama shows the town centre. The town is named after the port of Androssan in Scotland.
