Thalang National Museum is the main museum on Phuket. It deals mostly with the history of the island. Of special interest is the 18th century Battle of Thalang, in which two women defended Phuket from the Burmese. These women are remembered in the Two Heroines Statue at a nearby road junction.
The Thalang National Museum also has exhibits about tin mining in Phuket, the indigenous Sea Gypsy culture and the impact of Chinese influence and heritage on the island. It is a good place to begin to understand traditional, daily life which still influences many things in Phuket today.
The discovery recently of a large Hindu god statue, dating from the 9th century, shows that Phuket has also been influenced by India in the past. The statue, discovered in forest in Phang Nga, now stands in the main hall of the National Museum.
