Andermatt

Photographer Description of Andermatt

The famous ski resort of Andermatt in the Swiss Canton of Uri, is surrounded by the high Alps on all sides and is an important staging post for four major Alpine crossings. In summer it is an ideal starting point for the three-pass tour over the Furka, Grimsel and Susten Passes.
This is a view from outside the Hotel Drei Königen & Post, on the outskirts of the village.

Andermatt - Further Information

A map shows the small Alpine village of Andermatt nestled in the Urseren Valley in Gotthard holiday region of Switzerland, about 130km north of the border with Italy. The village is central to the Urserntal ski area during the winter months, and a popular base for mountain walking and climbing in the summer. There are numerous hotels, chalets and apartments in and around Andermatt to cater for the tourist trade. In the springtime the mountains are full of Alpine flowers, as shown in this panorama of Rotte near Oberwald.

Naturally, most of the tourist attractions around Andermatt focus on the mountains. Toggle to the satellite view of the Andermatt map to see the mountains. Among the main attractions are:

Valley Museum Description - known locally as the Talmuseum Ursern, the museum has displays on local history and culture.
  • Susten Road - winds up to the Susten pass (2259m) with stunning views of the Stein glacier, and then through Himmelrank gorge.
  • St. Gotthard Pass - at 2,109m the pass links Grisons and the Valais Alps and is considered to be one of the most picturesque passes in Switzerland.
  • Furka Pass Road - 32km or road from Gletsch to Andermatt with panoramic views of Rhone Glacier, and the Bernese and Valais Alps. The road ascends from 174m to a mountain pass at 2,392m.
