Cristo Rei - Almada - FURTHER INFORMATION

Cristo Rei - Almada - Almada visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Cristo Rei - Almada' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Distrito Setubal.

Cristo Rei (Christ the King) monument in Almada, Portugal, stands on a hill 113m high overlooking the River Tagus and the 25 de Abril Bridge (April 12th Bridge) towards Lisbon. A major tourist attraction, the monument consists of a 75m tall base, shaped like a gate, topped by a 28m tall statue of Christ the Redeemer. It was strongly influenced by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The virtual tour panorama, taken from ground level, shows both the Cristo Rei towering against the sky and the view over the river to Lisbon. You can clearly see the 25 de Abril Bridge spanning the strait.

The base of Cristo Rei was designed by António Lino and the Christ statue by Francisco Franco de Sousa. At the base of the statue is an observation platform allowing stunning panoramic views over Lisbon, Almada and the surrounding area. The statue took 9 years to build opening to the public in 1959, and was constructed in an attempt to expunge Portugal's guilt over entering WWII.

Cristo Rei is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the region, and no visit to Lisbon can be considered complete without it. Possibly only the famous beaches of Costa de Caparica are more popular. Other popular attractions nearby include Trafaria, Sesimbra beach, Tróia Peninsula beach and the Castles of Palmela.

Hello Peter, thank you very much for your kind comment. To get every platform was a litle bit difficult, but finally I got the right point. Cheers, Isabel

Hi Isabel - that is a great shot, love the drama created by the clouds. Did you manage to get up to the viewing platform at the base of the statue?
