St Pancras Church near Euston Station in Central London is an active Church of England building. It was built in the 19th century and is now a Grade I listed building, sometimes referred to as 'St Pancras New Church' to distinguish it from the much older St Pancras Old Church nearby.
The church is open to the public during the daytime, and, with beautiful stained glass windows, is worth visiting. At other times the church holds worship services and concerts and has changing art exhibitions in the crypt. It is close to both the Welcome Foundation and British Library.
The association with St Pancras may reach back to the 4th century. Pancras was beheaded in 304AD, at the age of 14, for refusing, in accordance with his Christian faith, to offer incense to emperor Dioclesian. 10 years later it is thought that a wooden chapel was built in London overlooking the River Fleet. The shrine was rebuilt several times, lastly in 1848, and still stands behind Euston Station in St Pancras Churchyard.
The St Pancras church shown here was built between 1819 and 1822, and at the time was the most expensive church in London to be built after St Paul's Cathedral. It is a brick building, faced with Portland Stone with some architectural elements based on the based on the Ionic Temple of the Erechtheum on the Acropolis in Athens.
