Martigny grew up next to the Rhone River, and has a history stretching back over 2000 years. It is in the Valais canton of Switzerland at an altitude of 470m, 30km west of the border with France and 40km north of Italy. Martigny is surrounded vineyards and orchards, is well known for excellent food and is full of good restaurants, hotels and guest houses. During the summer people flock here for the food and mountain walking, and in the winter it is near to several well known ski resorts like Verbier.
At the bottom of a glacial valley, where the Rhone turns 90° towards Lake Geneva, Martigny is surrounded by stunning mountains and hills. The town has numerous attractions, hotels, holiday challets and guesthouses. In the mountains, walkers will find a number of mountain huts. Some of the top Martigny attractions are:
- Pierre Gianadda Foundation (Fondation Pierre Gianadda) - constructed on the remains of a Roman Temple, this Gallo-Roman museum contains exhibition galleries and a veteran car collection of over 40 vehicles from 1897 to 1939.
- Burg La Bâtiaz - ruins of a 13th century castle, 30 minutes from Martigny, destroyed in 1518. One of the towers was restored in 1898.
- Valais Film Center - film and photography connected with Valais.
- Martigny Festivals - Martigny holds several festivals throughout the year many focussing on local arts, crafts and produce.The festivals include the Autumn Festival and Market, Spring Festival and Market, International Folk Festival and Martigny Festival
- Gorges du Trient - stunning 200m deep gorge near Vernayaz, north of Martigny.
- Col de la Forclaz / Mont de l'Arpille - windy mountain road south of Martigny passes through mountain villages to the Col de la Forclaz (1,527m) with stunning Alpine views.
- Flore-Alpe Alpine Botanic Garden - beautifully kept gardens created around a series of waterways.
- Les Marecottes - summer and winter resort in nearby Marylène with zoo, swimming, walking and chairlifts. Trient - picturesque village on the Col de la Forclaz road with access to the receding Trient Glacier and stunning mountain roads leading over a pass to France.
- Verbier - popular skiing and walking resort with 85 lifts and 320km of pistes and both winter and summer skiing.

Car: Martigny is about 130km from Geneva. It is about 25km from Vallorcine in France and 45km north of Saint Rhemy en Bosses in Italy.
