Calton Hill is a popular hill in the middle of Edinburgh on which are a number of monuments and attractions. In addition, there are several viewpoints offering good views over parts of Edinburgh and the countryside beyond. The North Viewpoint, seen in this picture, is part way up the northern side of Calton Hill. The views from here extend over Edinburgh New Town and to the hills beyond the Frith of Forth.
The path continues up the hill on which are Nelson's Monument, City Observatory (visible in this picture), National Monument and the Dugald Stewart Monument.
From the South Viewpoint there are good views over the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Holyrood Park with the Scottish Parliament Buildings, Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat. You also get views from here over the Old Town towards Edinburgh Castle
Calton Hill hosts the annual Beltane Fire Festival on April 30 each year. It is also a great place to watch fireworks during the Edinburgh Festival Fireworks and Hogmanay displays.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Footpaths lead up Carton Hill from Regent Road and Royal Terrace.
