The cathedral in Ciutadella is the main church of Menorca even though Ciutadella is no longer the capital of the island. It stands on Plaça de la Cathedral in the 'Es Born' historic district of the town and was built on the site of a Moorish mosque in the 14th century after King Alfonso III of Aragón of Spain recaptured the island from the Moors in 1287.
The cathedral is built in Catalan Gothic style but retains the old minaret. The exterior is decorated by a large collection of gargoyles and the facade dates from 1813. Ciutadella Cathedral suffered extensive damage in the Spannish Civil War but has since undergone extensive restorations. It is open to the public as one of the tourist attractions in the city.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
The Cathedral lies just south of Ciutadella Port, east of the Plaza de Born where there is some parking. Ciutadella is on the western end of Menorca, about 45km east of both Menorca Airport and Mahon.
