South West Coastal Path at Eype - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This is a viewpoint from The South West Coastal Path halfway between Eype and West Bay in Dorset, which is now part of the Jurassic Coast after receiving World heritage status in 2001. The beach seen here is at Eype, and the path itself extends 630 miles from Minehead in North Devon, around the entire Cornish coast, through South Devon, and finishes at Poole in Dorset.

The Southwest Coast Path is a 650 mile long coastal trail in southern England. One end of this National Trail starts at Minehead on the north coast of Somerset heading west along the north coast of Devon and Cornwall to Lands End. The trail then turns back east along the southern coast of Cornwall, Devon and Dorset ending up at Poole. Thus, the Southwest Coast Path is actually an amalgamation of four coastal paths, the Somerset & North Devon, Cornwall, South Devon, and Dorset Coastal paths. On the way it passes through a lot of National Trust land and, along the Dorset section, along the famous Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site.
The route is very popular in the summer months, especially around places like Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Lands End and Lizard Point. Much of it is very exposed and can be quite windy, it was the patrol route for Coastguards looking out for smugglers in past times. Because of this it hugs the coastline which means that it can rise and fall rapidly along the length. Weather can change rapidly, so being well prepared is essential, and it is advisable to carry good OS maps, ferry timetables and a good guide book showing the pubs and rest points on the way.
This picture shows a view along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset at Eype near Bridport and West Bay. Eype means 'steep place', and the path quickly descends from the tops of cliffs to picturesque bays and beaches only to climb once more. The Southwest Coast Path is not level! Nearby is Golden Cap, which, at 191m above sea level, is the highest hill on the South Coast. Walking a day along here you can easily accumulate over 1000m of ascent and descent on the way.
There are two popular circular walking routes around Eype. Both depart from Eype Mouth with one heading east to West Bay and the other over Thorncombe Beacon to Doghouse Hill. Both then return via inland roads.
