Inneston is a mining settlement at the heart of Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. Founded by, and named after, William Innes in 1913, Inneston became the focus of Gypsum mining in the area and the population grew to around 500.
Gypsum mined from the nearby Marion Lake was taken to Stenhouse Bay, loaded onto ships at Stenhouse Bay Jetty and then shipped to Adelaide and other parts of South Australia. Mining operations ceased in the 1930's and the town declined. In recent years some of the houses in Inneston have been restored and opened up as accommodation within Innes National Park. The majority remain as ruins with interpretative signs along a good walking track for tourists.
Innes National Park is one of the few remaining areas of natural vegetation on the Yorke Peninsula and is an vital natural habitat for several endangered species.
