Innes National Park - FURTHER INFORMATION

Innes National Park - Innes National Park visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Innes National Park' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from South Australia.

Innes National Park covers much of the southern tip of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. Within the park are spectacular, rugged coastal landscapes and habitats and remnants of South Australias mining and maritime history. Inland, the park has several large salt lakes and mallee woodlands. Innes National Park is one of the very few pockets of natural vegetation on the Yorke Penisula. Historically occupied by the Narungga people, the park covers 9,232 ha of land and is an important refuge for biodiversity, providing habitat for 115 species of conservation significance.

The Visitor Information Centre for Innes National Park is found in Stenhouse Bay. Here visitors can find out about activities, campsites and other accommodation within the park and make the most out of their visit.

Some 300km from Adelaide, Innes provides a wide variety of recreation including bushwalking, bird watching, photography, camping, discovering the Aboriginal and European history, fishing and surfing. Some of the highlights within the park include:

  • Inneston - Mining town founded by William Innes in 1913 to mine gypsum, which was taken to Stenhouse Bay for shipping.
  • Bushwalking - Innes has 7 marked trails that take between 30 minutes to 4 hours to complete, exploring both the coastal areas and the mining history.
  • Stenhouse Bay - old port with a long jetty, used to export mined gypsum.
  • Cape Spencer Lighthouse - 7km from Stenhouse Bay, set on top of dramatic cliffs with stunning views along the coast.
  • West Cape Lighthouse - can be accessed via one of the walking trails.
  • Nature and Wildlife Viewing - Innes National Park is full of bird life, including the endangered Osprey. At the right time of the year, Southern Right Whales can often be seen from the shore.
  • Surfing and Fishing - A popular spot for fishing is Stenhouse Bay Jetty. The area is popular for surfing, and the Cutloose Coopers Yorke's Classic surfing competition is held in Stenhouse Bay.
  • Shipwrecks - over 40 ships have sunk off the coast around Innes National Park. The most famous is the 'Ethel' which sank in 1904, the remains of which can be seen on Ethel Beach. An interpretive maritime trail along the coast of the park tells the story of the wrecks.
  • Stromatolites - Innes National Park is one of the few places where Stromatolites are known to exist. Carbon dating has indicated that some of the stromatolites are about 3,000 years old.
