Carcavelos Beach is the most popular leisure beach at Carcavelos, near Oeiras and Lisbon. It is the first beach on between the mouth of the Tagus River and the beaches of the Estoril Coast, with 1km of fine sand overlooked by the fortress of St. Julian of Barra (Forte de São Julião da Barra).
The beach attracts large crowds in the summer, with good windsurfing, surfing and fishing. It has world class surf attracting people from all over the world. The beach has good access with car parking nearby and it is lined with various bars. There are no beach-front hotels, the nearest hotel being about 400m away.
This panorama shows a view over Carcavelos Beach. At the eastern end you can see the fortress of St. Julian of Barra. It was the largest maritime fortress in Portugal, protecting the mouth of the Tagus River and Lisbon Harbour. Today the fortress houses the Minister of Defense.
Carcavelos has a very Mediterranean climate and the region produces some good wine. From 2010 the region's wine will be marketed under the 'Conde de Oeiras' trademark.
