Inside Star of the Sea Painted Church - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken inside the Star of the Sea Painted Church on Hawaii Island. The church used to stand in a town, but that was swallowed by lava from the Kilauea Volcano, and the townsfolk managed to move the church out of harms way. It now stands isolated near the destroyed village.

The Star of the Sea church in Kalaplana, Hawaii Island, was built between 1927-1928 under the direction of Father Evarist Gielen, a Belgian Catholic missionary. Father Gielen painted the upper section of the church's interior. In In 1941 an artist from Athens called George Heidler painted the lower panels of the church. Because of the interior decorations the Star of the Sea church is often referred to as the 'Painted Church'.
The other unusual thing about the Star of the Sea church is that in 1990 an eruption from the Kupaianaha shield of Kilauea Volcano which had begun 4 years earlier finally overwhelmed Kalapana. The townsfolk loaded the church onto a lorry and moved it out of the way of the advancing lava to the current site only 45 minutes before the old site was covered by lava.
Star of the Sea church is open to the public, a minor attraction in the Puna District.
