Kalapana Road under Lava - FURTHER INFORMATION
Kalapana Road under Lava - Hawaii Island visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Kalapana Road under Lava' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Hawaii.
Kalapana town was buried by lava by the ongoing eruption from Kilauea Volcano in 1986 when lava flow from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent destroyed and buried many of the buildings in the town. The flow also buried sections of Chain of Craters Road.
This flow also buried nearby Kaimu and Kaimu Bay, which are now buried under 50 feet of lava, creating a new coastline. In 1990 the Star of the Sea church was loaded onto a truck and moved out of the way of the advancing lava. The western end of Chain of Crater Road can be accessed in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
