Kinston is a tiny village in Dorset, just south of Corfe Castle and north of Worth Matravers. The village is built on the slope of a steep hill, and has dramatic views north over the the ruins of Corfe Castle and the Purbeck hills.
On top of a hill within Kingston stands St James Church, a Gothic church built in in the late 19th century by the Tird Earl of Eldon. The church was designed by George Edmund Street, who also worked on St Peter's Church in Bournemouth and St James the Less in London.
St James Kingston took 7 years to build, being finished in 1880. It is built of Purbeck Stone, quarried on the local Encombe estate, but in very different style to traditional churches in the area, with a central tower and round stair turret copied from Christchurch Priory. Inside is an impressive church organ and a round of 10 bells.
