Worth Matravers - FURTHER INFORMATION

Worth Matravers - Swanage visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Worth Matravers' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Dorset.

The tiny village of Worth Matravers in Dorset dates back to Roman times. A short distance form both Corfe Castle and Swanage, Worth Matravers grew up on farming, agriculture and quarrying. Throughout the year, the area is popular for walking, with easy access to parts of the Jurassic Coast. These inevitably seem to either start and / or stop at the Square and Compass pub.

Worth Matravers has a number of local attractions and places of interest:

  • Church of St Nicholas - Norman church, one of the oldest in Dorset, with the grave of Benjamen Jesty who developed a smallpox vaccine in 1774.
  • St Nicholas Church - church of Saxon origin and one of the oldest churches in Dorset.
  • St Aldhelm's Head - walk from the village to headland on the Jurassic Coast, where you can find St Aldhelm's Chapel, Radar Research Memorial and an NCI Lookout Station.
  • Winspit - great walk past ancient Strip Lynchet fields to a disused coastal quarry with old caves, rocky ledges and some climbing.
  • Seacombe - disused coastal quarry southeast of the village. Part of a popular, circular walking route from Worth Matravers via Winspit.
  • Chapmans Pool - southwest of the village, popular for fossil hunting but has quite a long walk to it. The Southwest Coast Path continues beyond Chapmans Pool to Kimmeridge Bay and then Lulworth Cove.
