Patong (Phatphong, พัฒน์พงษ์) is made up of two side streets that run between Silom Road and Surawong Road in the Bang Rak district of Bangkok. Infamous as the red light district, Patong is lined by night clubs and go-go dance clubs. In the night there is a tourist market selling fake goods at high prices. It is close to Lumphini Park and next to the Christian University of Bankgok, close to many hotels.
Patong is named after the Patpongpanich family Chinese immigrants who moved to Bangkok from Hainan Island in China, buying land in the area in 1946. The family built a road here (Patpong 1) and several shophouses. Later on Patpong 2 road was added. The area grew up on traditional businesses but in the late 1960's and 1970's the night life and prostitution developed serving US forces on leave from Vietnam.
In recent years the sex trade has begun to move away from Patong, and the area now supports several well respected music venues. However, there are many chances for tourists to be separated from their cash in less reputable establishments and on the street markets, whose goods are mostly fake copies of fashion items.
