Thanon Silom runs southwest from the entrance to Lumphini Park, past Patong to the Assumption Cathedral next to the river. Nearby is Suan Lum Night Bazaar, a popular tourist attraction with a ferris wheel.
Patong (Phatphong) was notorious as the red light district of Bangkok. Named after the Patpongpanich family, it started as a general business district but grew into the go-go girl club center of the city. In recent years some of the prostitution has begun to move away from the area, and there are now a few reputable music clubs in the district offering live performances and bands.
Patpongpanich family members moved here from Hainan Island in 1946. They built Patong 1 road and then, shortly after, Patong 2 road. The red light activity developed around US servicemen on leave during the Vietnam war and remained since. Though the sex industry is declining, the arrival of new music venues and clubs is keeping the area very much active at night. Patong also has a lively night market, though much of what is available is fake, copies and over priced. The area also still has a number of sex clubs and shows.
